Rarely does the rate you get at your hotel bare much resemblance to what www.xe.com quotes, but if you are going to get hosed you might as well know for how much.

Besides, it can go both ways. In the early 1980s I watched the Bolivian Peso go from 430 BOB/US$ to 570 BOB/US$ and back to 470 BOB/US$ in just five days. A decent hotel cost $2.50 to $3.00. A liter of beer fluctuated from 3.3¢ to 2.5¢ to 3¢ US. While a nightmare for the Bolivians, it was a dream come true for a traveler on a binge.
